Ask a Question

We've combined everything you need in one complete kit to grow dung loving species like Agaricus "white button" and others exotics. Sure it's basic and simple but that's why we love it! This kit was designed for simplicity and low cost. It does not require clean room conditions at each stage of the process (general cleanliness is still required).

The whole idea around this kit is to introduce you to growing mushrooms without spending a lot of money. We designed this kit based on the shoebox tek found on mushroom growing forums.

Simple and Effective Process

  • Simply inject the bag with your own multi-spore syringe or liquid culture.
  • After 2-8 weeks the grain will be consumed by mycelium and ready for transfer to bulk substrate.
  • Mix both the grain and substrate bags in the plastic box and cover with lid.
  • After 2-3 weeks the substrate will be completely colonized and ready for fruiting.
  • Remove the lid, mist with distilled or boiled water, fan and place the included 2nd container on top. The tiny gap between the boxes is important for air flow.
  • Mist and fan 2 times per day to encourage fruiting.

What's Included:

  • 3lb Sterilized Grain Bag with Injection Port - The bag contains hydrated grain that's been sterilized. Sterilizing is extremely important to ensuring only your intended fungus is growing. An injection port is included to provide a clean way of transferring sterile multiple spore solution or liquid culture.
  • 5lb Sterilized Manure Based Substrate - This substrate is made up of cow manure, coco coir and vermiculite with a the perfect amount of water. It's pasteurized via steam for 16 hours to ensure all living organisms are destroyed. Doing this helps to ensure your success in growing mushrooms instead of mold.
  • 2 - 6qt Plastic Boxes - These are simply small plastic totes. No need to add any unnecessary complexity to this. It works well as a container for the colonizing substrate and to provide a simple fruiting chamber.
  • Misting Bottle - Be sure to use only distilled or boiled water. This is important since most tap water contained chlorine which can kill fungi.
  • 1 Lid - Just a simple lid. However, we recommend covering the plastic container with foil first to create a better cover with minimal air exchange. The lid adds protection.
  • Nylon Gloves - We highly recommend using gloves while inoculating and working with your substrate and grain. This helps to keep things clean and contamination free.
  • Black Plastic Liner - One issue with growing mushrooms in containers is they love to grow between the substrate and container. The liner blocks the light and discourages mushrooms from forming from anywhere but the top.

As you can see we've include everything you need and nothing you don't!

Expert Tip Starting your spores, liquid culture or clone on Agar Plates gives you the best opportunity to see and avoid contaminants early in the process. It also helps with isolating stronger mycelium by being able to visually identify better performing sectors. Add a 10 Pack of Pre-poured Agar Plates to your order.
