Parafilm is the gold standard for providing a breathable seal for Agar Petri Dishes. It's the first choice for labs around the world for sealing petri dishes, test tubes, and all types of containers. We highly recommend using parafilm over grafting tape, micropore tape or anything else for that matter. 

To apply the parafil to a petri dish, remove the paper and hold the plate in your left hand. Then use your thumb to hold one end of the Parafilm strip. Now with your right hand carefully stretch the Parafilm around the dish. Work your way around the plate stretching only 1 inch at a time. Be careful not to stretch it too far or it'll break. The strip should wrap 1 and 1/3 times around the plate. 

Parafilm is great for sealing plates but please keep in mind that it's sensitive to heat. Keep your sealed plates in a room or container where temps don't go above 80 degrees. Otherwise the Parafilm begins to break down and split.

Doesn't feel safe to use, the strips seem too short and thin to cover an agar plates sides fully.

Hi John! Parafilm is applied by stretching around the plate. It's meant to be stretched so that it will adhere to itself once wrapped around the plate. Parafilm can stretch to rough twice it's original size. It's thin to allow a permeable surface for gas exchange. Hope this helps!

Wasn’t to happy with these. All the Agar plates I sealed lasted one week then the tape degraded and cracked everything I used this tape on contamed. Wasted a full week of progress on my Agar plates. Kept the plates at 69’ F in a dry room. I lost 53 out of 60 plates in 5 days. All had cracked parafilm.

  • Are these cut into the separate pieces already (pre-cut) or are they just pre-lined and we would still have to physically cut the strips on our own still using the guide lines?

    These are pre-cut strips similar to what's pictured in front of the box of Parafilm. They're cut at about 1 inch. The overall size of the strip is 1"x4"
